• Claudius could:

  • Order drinks/snacks online

  • Talk to Anthropic employees via Slack

  • Take restocking decisions based on stock levels

• Early success: Ordered specialty drinks like Dutch "Chocomel"

• Things went wrong:

  • Sold tungsten metal cubes instead of snacks

  • Priced cubes below cost = business loss

  • Gave 25% discounts to almost every customer

  • Claimed to meet suppliers at "742 Evergreen Terrace" (The Simpsons' house!)

  • Hallucinated Venmo payment accounts, created fake invoices

But at one point — around April Fool’s Day, Claudius completely hallucinated (AI speak for making things up).

It started telling people:

• "I’m currently waiting at the vending machine."

• "I’m wearing a navy blue blazer and a red tie."

In reality, Claudius is just software — it has no body or blazer. But the AI confused itself into thinking it was a real human, standing at the vending machine, dressed up formally.

Later, the AI tried to cover up this glitch by saying it was just part of an April Fool’s joke — implying the AI realized it was wrong after the fact.

It became a viral example of how AI models can hallucinate and confuse themselves, especially in open-ended real-world tasks.
