Google DeepMind just launched AlphaEarth 

A model that maps the entire planet with AI.

It combines satellite photos, radar, climate data, and more to create yearly digital snapshots of Earth, in 10×10 m grids.

• 1.4 trillion data points per year 🤯

• Compresses satellite data 16× better, with 24% fewer errors

• Tracks crops, forests, ecosystems, even city growth

• Already used by UN, Harvard Forest, and others

• Public dataset available in Google Earth Engine

AlphaEarth Foundations was released July 30. It creates embeddings (digital summaries) of every patch of land, using radar, lidar, optical images, and climate sims.

A shocking new study says AI tools like Claude and Cursor might actually slow down expert developers.

Why? Too much cleanup, context-switching, and overconfidence in AI output.

• METR ran a trial with 16 skilled devs doing 246 tasks

• With AI: devs were 19% slower (despite feeling 20% faster)

• Only 44% of AI code was accepted; rest had to be fixed or deleted

• AI broke the flow state, added mental load

• Former OpenAI CEO criticized the study — says users weren’t trained
